# gitmind > gitmind is an open-source memory for AI agents: it stores what Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Codex learn as Markdown notes in a git repository you own, and serves the same notes to every app over MCP (Model Context Protocol). Key facts: - Hosted at https://gitmind.app, free with a GitHub sign-in. The remote MCP endpoint is https://gitmind.app/mcp, with OAuth sign-in, and works as a custom connector in claude.ai (web, desktop, mobile) and ChatGPT, and in Claude Code and Codex. - The `gitmind` CLI (macOS, Linux, Windows) is a local MCP server for Claude Code and Codex that keeps a synced git clone of the notes in ~/.gitmind; it can sync with gitmind.app, a private GitHub repository, or a self-hosted server. - Notes are Markdown with YAML frontmatter, observations like `- [decision] fact #tag` and `[[wiki links]]`; compatible with Basic Memory and Obsidian. Every change is a git commit. - gitmind runs no LLM of its own: the agent decides what to save; gitmind stores, indexes (keyword full-text search plus, in gitmind cloud, semantic search with embeddings), searches and syncs. - Team workspaces, import of Claude and ChatGPT chat exports, and a web app for browsing and editing notes. - Open source (AGPL-3.0), self-hostable on Cloudflare: https://github.com/dunkbing/gitmind Each docs page is also available as Markdown by replacing the trailing slash with `.md` (for example https://gitmind.app/docs/quickstart.md). ## Getting started - [Introduction](https://gitmind.app/docs/introduction/): What gitmind is, and why your agents' memory belongs in a git repository you own. - [Quickstart](https://gitmind.app/docs/quickstart/): Sign in, connect your first AI app, and save your first memory in a few minutes. - [Connect your AI apps](https://gitmind.app/docs/connect/): Add gitmind to claude.ai, Claude Desktop and mobile, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Codex. ## Guides - [CLI and local sync](https://gitmind.app/docs/cli/): Keep a synced git clone of your memory on each machine, serve it to local agents, and add recall and save hooks to Claude Code. - [Writing notes](https://gitmind.app/docs/notes/): The note format agents use: observations, tags, links, history, pinned and locked notes. - [Workspaces and teams](https://gitmind.app/docs/teams/): Personal and team workspaces, invites and roles. - [Import your history](https://gitmind.app/docs/import/): Bring in Claude and ChatGPT conversations, or a folder of Markdown notes. ## Reference - [MCP tools](https://gitmind.app/docs/tools/): Reference for every tool gitmind exposes to agents. - [How it works](https://gitmind.app/docs/how-it-works/): Architecture, syncing and conflict handling, for the curious. - [Self-hosting](https://gitmind.app/docs/self-hosting/): Run your own gitmind on your Cloudflare account. - [Security and privacy](https://gitmind.app/docs/security/): Who can read your memory, how sign-in works, and what gitmind refuses to store. - [How gitmind compares](https://gitmind.app/docs/compare/): gitmind next to ChatGPT and Claude's built-in memory, CLAUDE.md files, Basic Memory and Mem0: what each is for, and when to choose which. - [FAQ](https://gitmind.app/docs/faq/): Answers to common questions about gitmind: MCP memory, Claude and ChatGPT support, privacy, pricing, self-hosting and how it compares. ## Optional - [Full documentation in one file](https://gitmind.app/llms-full.txt) - [Home page](https://gitmind.app/): overview, setup snippets and common questions - [Source code](https://github.com/dunkbing/gitmind) - [Agent memory instructions](https://github.com/dunkbing/gitmind/blob/main/AGENT_MEMORY.md): standing instructions to give agents
